Reports & photos from Nancy K.
Lochaber’s Helen Rennard finished this English Championship race as eighth senior female. A great result in a strong field. Results to follow on the FRA website.
Due to fallen trees this years Fyrish was shortened slightly to 13k and 540m of ascent. This made the race no less tough with a certain amount of re ascent to contend with following a tough push up through a firebreak to reach the summit. Ten Lochaber runners made the trip north with the obligatory stop at the Beauly deli en route. First LAC home was Ewan Thorburn in fifth place in a time of 01:05:46. Mike Connolly was 1st MVet 60 in 01:24:16 and Nancy Kennedy was 1st FV50 in 01:35:07 . All Lochaber runners put in a strong performance and it was good to see so many club vests in action. Others taking part were:- Gavin MacMillan 01:13:33, Niall MacBeath 01:17:26, Alan Lamont 01:17:30, Barrie MacKinnon 01:19:40,Robert MacLean 01:24:15, Susan Jane Ross 01:33:13 and Graham MacNab 01:45:24
Rowardennan was the venue for the second SHR championship race, as usual there was a good turnout of runners. On what was a perfect day, six Lochaber runners made the journey. Edie Hemstock was our top performer finishing in a time of 01:32:25, Markus Mertens 01:36:31, Robert MacNeil 01:51:06, Ray Murdoch 01:57:30, Elma Murdoch 02:37:13 and June Watt 02:47:27 also took part. On the out and back course it was great to see the battle for first place with three Shettleston runners hurtling downhill and the one red vest of Carnethy in the mix. Tom Owens 01:06:52 won the race for Shettleston and Andy Fallas 01:07:43 took second place for Carnethy. Thanks go to the organisers, loads of marshals for encouragement and the accommodating hill walkers. Thanks also to Corrina for the photos.
Well done to Stephen Burns who travelled to take part in the under 20’s race.
The first race in the Scottish Long Series got underway on Saturday at Strathayre. Cold windy conditions faced the runners, Hector Haines(HBT) in a time of 02:08:33 beat Lochaber’s Finlay Wild into 2nd place, Finlay’s time was 02:12:58. The new start/finish means the course has a new record. Jon Gay finishing 12th overall was 3rd MV40 in a time of 02:39:49, our only female runner to take part was Sarah Mackenzie whose time 03:11:23 placed her 5th among the ladies. Yan Valentine (03:21:24) and Colin Britton (03:55:12) did very well in what I suspect was a very different challenge for both runners. Well done to all. Thanks to Jon Gay for update and photo.
What do you do when you reach the big 5….0. Well here’s what Emma did. Many happy returns from Lochaber Athletic Club.
Last Wednesday night 11 LAC runners travelled to Luss for the Beinn Dubh race, a sunny evening provided perfect conditions and with no road/trail to warm up it was straight up the grassy route. Views from the top were spectacular and well worth the effort. Callum Fraser was our best performer in 11th place, the only prize winner among us was FV60 Elma Murdoch. Thanks to the organisers and Mountain Rescue.
Photos by Margaret Rose MacPhee from the recent winter league junior prize giving. Well done to all.
Dingwall was the venue for this tough underfoot hill race, fortunately there were glimpses of sun and only slight mist covering the top, the main obstacle was the fast flowing burn, waist deep for those with short legs. LAC had 12 runners on the start line Hugh Mackintosh was our top finisher in 14th place in a time of 01:21:07 (3rd v50), Gavin Macmillan 01:22:12, Andrew Hagan 01:23:57, Robert Maclean 01:37:00, Mike Connolly 01;39:12(2nd v60), Graham Macnab 01:44:02, Ross MacMillan 01:53:27, Bill Cameron 01:57:12, Aileen Kitson 02:28:30, Elma Murdoch 02:29:14 and Ray Murdoch 02:29:14 also took part. The Ghost Runner listed on the results may have been one of our young runners (no names no polis station) with an impressive 01:20:12.
Having sampled some excellent hospitality at hill race events I must say todays baking was top drawer with loads left for the backmarkers. Well done to the caterers and also officials and marshals.
The first Scottish Hill Racing Championship took place on Saturday at Birnam, not surprisingly there was a huge turnout with over 200 starters. The field consisted of the best hill runners in the country down to the old guard who faithfully turn out to test themselves against the hill. The best performance from LAC and finishing fourth was Finlay Wild, with the results not yet available others known to have taken part from Lochaber were Graham MacNab, Marie Meldrum, Suzy Devy, June Watt, Elma & Ray Murdoch, apologies if others missed. The race was won by Wegene Tafese (Ron Hill Cambuslang) in around 29mins
Well done to the organisers and caterers for the event and Willie Anderson for photos
Reminder…….Training moves to Claggan for the summer months usual time 6pm. All welcome.
