Lochaber runner June Watt travelled to Interlaken for the Jungfrau Marathon in September. Here is June’s report.
Voted as one of the world’s most beautiful marathons, it starts in Interlaken and climbs 5026ft to finish in Kleinne Scheidegg at the foot of the spectacular Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger mountains.
Having been there on holiday a couple of years before and seeing posters of The Marathon, I thought it would be a great excuse to come back and run in such stunning surroundings. The fact that I’d never run a marathon before was a minor detail!?
I thought I’d see if it was possible for my body to complete one and trained for our local marathon in 2013. I was happy with my time and realised that my joints could withstand the distance without too much pain.
Application was on line and thinking it would be impossible for me to get in, I stayed up to the early hours to ensure my entry. I was shocked, delighted and nervous when I realised that I’d been accepted and would have to start some serious training.
Race day arrived and amid the carnival atmosphere, blue skies and fresh alpine air, nerves were forgotten and I ran the first 3km loop around the town with 4000+ runners and a big smile on my face. I’d done all the hard work, now I was just going to enjoy it.
The first 10km were flat then the gradual climb up the valley to Lauterbrunnen through picturesque Swiss Chalet villages which were lined with cheering crowds, various bands playing and people ringing huge cowbells. Suppoort was amazing with drinks/food stations every 5kms, laid out in neat piles for easy access. The valley boasts 72 waterfalls + 400ft cliffs from which we saw base jumpers launching themselves off and landing in front of us.
At 26km, the real climb began, involving a steep 1800ft climb up to Wengen which was the first cut off point at 30km + 4233ft. I was delighted and relieved to make it with 4 minutes to spare and now focused on the hardest part of the race which was trying to make the next cut off point at Wixi/38km and 6120ft before the sweeper’s bike. I tried to push on but it was hot and hard, with the legs tiring. I made it to 34km before the bike appeared. With 4km to go I kept pushing and reached Wixi but was timed out at 8 minutes over the time.
Disappointed but was delighted to have made it to Wixi and see the Eiger during the race as well as experiencing such a wonderful, well organised and supported race. Willie was shocked to see me behind him at the finish line, but happy I’d done so well and even more delighted when I got my finishers beer, t-shirt and medal.
