Report from Sarah
The Beinn Ratha Hill Race took place on the 15th April, at Reay just outside of Thurso, in the far north. Squally weather made for challenging running conditions, very wet under foot with spells of rain, hail and………beautiful sunshine!! A combination of landrover track, pathless rugged ground and a short road section makes Beinn Ratha a fantastic tough hill race, well worth the trip up north. Two LAC athletes competed this year. Steve MacDonald finished second in a time of 00:53:56, hot on the heels of last years winner William Nicolson (Highland Hill Runners). William’s time was 00:53:35 . Sarah MacKenzie came first in the ladies race in 01:05:48 ahead of Fiona Bremner (North Highland Harriers). Thanks to North Highland Harriers for a warm welcome, great prizes and of course tea and cakes at the finish.
Sarah MacKenzie was the only LAC runner to take part in the recent Ben Gullipen race near Callander. A good performance saw Sarah finish 2nd lady, four minutes behind Mary McCutcheon (Giffnock) in a time of 01:07:20. Well done Sarah, good to see you back on the race circuit.
Alex Brett Cioch Mhor
Richard Macleod was Lochaber’s best performer at this hill race in Dingwall. Richard finished in 8th place in a time of 01:16:24. Making the trip also was Gavin MacMillan 01:21:52 and Allan Lamont 01:39:32. Thanks to Highland HR for some super photos of the guys.
Following his Winter League successes John Yells did very well in finishing in 2nd place of 57 runners in the Deuchary Canter. The more experienced Joe Symonds won the race comfortably in a time of 01:22:54. John’s time was 01:30:03.
Perfect conditions for this race saw 93 runners on the start line. The course was pretty much dry and has a fast start and finish. Alex Cheplin (Edinburgh Uni) proved too good for the rest of the runners winning with over 11 mins to spare. Robert McLean and Ray Murdoch made the trip, Robert’s time was 01:32:04, Ray’s time was 02:02:42. Thanks to Cosmics for a well marked course with marshals aplenty and after race drinks and goodies.

SPECTATORS LINED THE ROUTE
Saturday was the first race in the Scottish Hill Championship series. New Abbey near Dumfries was the venue for the race up Knockendoch and Criffel. The route which is a medium category served up challenging conditions underfoot with no dry track beyond the tarmac road, mud, mud and more mud being the norm. Over 200 runners started, Finlay Wild and Ray Murdoch from Lochaber made the trip south. Finlay chased and caught Graham Gristwood(Ochils) on the downhill but eventually Graham triumphed on the road section finishing in a time of 00:50:51, Finlay finished 7secs behind in 00:50:58 and ahead of Murray Strain(HBT) 00:53:20. Georgia Tindley(HBT) was first lady with a time of 01:05:58. Ray finished in a time 01:39:05 having run the downhill with inov8 shoe ripped from toe to heel, ironically Gus Bowman had mentioned on the start line he lost his inov8 sole the previous year in the race.
