The final race of Lochaber Athletic Club’s Junior Winter League took place on Sunday in good conditions on Sunday in Leanachan forest.
Calum Fraser set a new under 15 boys course record of 15.21 over the 4km route, with Joseph Tangney not too far behind in 15.52 and inside the old record. Craig MacLean was 3rd in 18.08. Isla MacKay also set a new course record in the girls under 15 race in a time of 17.11, with Emily Strathdee 2nd and Elidh Moynhihan 3rd.
Innes Blackhall set an age group record of 10.16 in the under 13 boys race, with Bruce MacLean just behind in 10.33 and Ewan MacLean 3rd in 10.38. Rachael MacPherson won the Under 13 girls in 11.24, with Eleanor Strathdee 2nd and Rosa Gibson 3rd.
The Under 11 boys race was won by Ruairdh Shaw in a good 10.58, 2nd was Keir Gibson 11.26 and 3rd Lachie Shaw 11.32 with Alex Dent just behind in 11.41.
In the Under 11 girls race the times ran were exceptionally fast. Ishbel Strathdee from Edinburgh won in 10.40, the fastest time for any girl over this course, Robyn Blackhall was 2nd in 11.21( this would have been a course record by over a minute!!) and Abbie Blackhall was 3rd in 11.23.
Snowy conditions did not deter 90 runners from taking part in the annual Lochaber Athletics Club New Years Day Race. The runners started from Nevis Range Bottom Station and ran the 2.5 miles climbing 2,000 feet to the top restaurant. The entire course was white with snow and had a few icy patches! For the first time this winter Manny Gorman did not make a podium place. Local Ruari Watt had a fantastic run and finished first in a time of 27 minutes and 4 seconds in front of Ed Catmuir from Thames Running Club. Ewan Taylor from Perth Road Runners was 3rd. The times were slower than usual due to the snowy conditions. Manny Gorman (Westies) came in 4th and was also 1st veteran Male in 27 minutes and 54 seconds. Alan Dent was 1st Veteran 50 ( 14th overall) in 32 minutes and 11 seconds. Lochabers Nix Forster finished 1st Lady in 33 minutes and 48 seconds in front of team mates Amanda Blackhall and Linda McEwan. 1st Lady Veteran over 50 was Christine Menhennet in a time of 37 minutes and 4 seconds.
Lochaber Athletic Club would like to thank Nevis Range Staff, all marshalls, and especially Andy Rogers who did the timing yet again.
Sun 21 Nov 2010 Fort William by Roger Boswell
Lovely weather and the prospect of running up the wonderful Achdalieu stalking path for the last time attracted 73 runners to the Druim Fada Hill Race on Sun 21 Nov. Pals Dawn Scott and Davey Rodgers won the women’s and men’s races and both finished about 90 secs outside the race records, both getting back to form now. Dawn finished well clear of Amanda Blackhall who was herself well clear of the other girls. The boys race was more competitive, with Graeme Bartlett of Forres pushing Davey all the way finishing 10 secs behind him, with Ross Bannerman of Highland Hill Runners 4th 1 minute later. Best run of the day was probably over 50 Alan Smith of Deeside, finishing 4th.
Next winter series race is Ben Lora, hill/forest trail (3 miles/1100 feet), Benderloch, bring body cover in case it’s grim.
While the rest of the country were struggling to get around this weekend the going on Beinn Lora was pretty good. It was clear of snow and a hard frost to firm up the large boggy sections near the summit. 69 runners turned up with only one DNF. Last years winner Alex Johnson complained of being “unfit” but still produced a good run to win again well clear of 2nd placed John Binnie who was first M40. 3rd was an outstanding run from Callum Fraser, 2nd to the top but dropping a place on the descent, Callum is only 14 and was running “unofficially” as the lower age limit is 16 but ive included him in the results nevertheless.
Another blinding run came from Nicola Meekin, coming in just behind Donald Paterson in 5th overall, smashing her own record down to 29.57. 2nd lady was Sarah Ward, getting faster all the time and 3rd was Nix Forster who was also 1st F40.
Brian Campbell was fastest M50 just edging out regular face on the hill running scene Davie Duncan. Nancy Kennedy took F50 honours while Mike Tighe with 37.57 was the fastest M60.
Calum Fraser set a new course record of 9 minutes 6 seconds in the Under 15 boys race at the Canal Bank Junior Winter League on Sunday, with Sean Munro 2nd( 10.01)and Joseph Tangney 3rd ( 10.13). Isla Mackay just missed the girls course record winning the Under 15 girls race in 10.33, with Eilidh Moynihan 2nd ( 12.01) and Hanna Dougan 3rd(18.23). Bruce MacLean won the Under 13 boys race just ahead of brother Ewan, Stephen Dent was 3rd and Rosa Gibson won the Under 13 girls race. Ruairdh Shaw had an excellent run in the Under 11 boys race to win ahead of brother Lachie and Keir Gibson was just behind in 3rd.
The day before saw a number of Lochaber athletes competing at the Elgin Cross Country. Calum finished 3rd following his win at the first league meeting at Lochaber, Isla MacKay had a fantastic 2nd place, Bruce MacLean was 12th, David Rodgers was 3rd senior man and 1st Vet with Dawn Scott 4th lady.
Despite the Lochaber type weather for the weekend we all had a great time (not necessarily in the race).
